The Rio Grande Turkey is native to the Great Plains, west Texas, and north Mexico. Rio Grande Turkeys can reach a height of four feet. The feathers on its rump are copper colored. They have a changing color pattern, from brown to tan. They used to exist in large numbers, but now are in very small numbers. Programs involving trapping and moving the turkeys were made in Texas in the 1930’s. The bag limit for the Rio Grande Turkey is four. The fall turkey season in Texas is the same as white-tailed deer.
