white-tailed

The white-tailed deer is the most commonly hunted large game in North America.  The white-tailed population is the largest in Texas.  There are 3-4 million white-tailed deer in Texas.  The deer's coat is red-brownish color in spring and summer and turns greyish color in the fall and winter.  The deer is easily recognized by the white underside of its tail.  When the deer is alarmed, it sticks its tail up in the air before escaping danger.

Bucks weigh from 130-220 pounds.  Some bucks have weighed up to 350 pounds!  Does weigh 90-200 pounds.  White-tails lose their antlers annually.  The antlers grow in the spring and are covered with velvet.  White-tails have good senses that help them avoid predators.  They depend on those senses to survive.  They have excellent hearing and sight.

A lot of people eat white-tail deer.  The venison has a lot of protein in it, but half the fat of beef.
